In tough times, they can make good meat shields, particularly on PC where they fight back. Mass-NPC deaths can take time to recover from as they move back in gradually, so it's something you'll sometimes want to prevent. NPCs who are killed during fights will often respawn the next day. This list's purpose is to help you have enough room at any point in time by showing you the NPC requirements so you can plan ahead, and informing you of the biome that NPC prefers if they are to sell extra stuff - only a few do. Most can move in pre-Hardmode but others will require you to defeat the Wall of Flesh and enable Hard Mode while filling other requirements before they can reside in your town. Some of them can be found while exploring the game's various areas underground, while others will move in once certain requirements are met. Making room for extra is always wise, given there are a total of 21 (18 on console/mobile) who can move in during any time of year, so long as you provide them with valid housing. Any who act as a vendor can also buy your items (it doesn't matter who you sell what to, the price is the same). NPCs (Non-Player Characters) tend to be friendly, helpful residents of your town who sell materials and devices that can be super-helpful to you. I am not proud of its aesthetics, but it shows all but a few of the NPCs who can move into the world.
